Listening to The Vergecast Matter Holiday Spec-tacular podcast episode and it's got me wondering:

Why hasn't "Smart Home Installer" turned into a trade like electrician or plumber? Like, there's all this talk about how complex and end-user unfriendly all the networking & automations are.

And I'm like... that sounds like a job for an actual professional? I didn't install my plumbing or water heater or furnace or solar panels. Why is the smart home stuff aimed at end-users?

Like I'm relatively smart and handy. I've done light plumbing & electrical in my own home (after reading up on all the regionally appropriate codes of course). I've got a few smart home widgets buzzing away in my house. But, mostly that's all just told me this is better done by someone else who knows what they're doing, past a certain point.

@GeoffWozniak I'm mean. that's actually smart if you want to stop working for an extended period.

Like, whoops upgrades, see y'all next year

A part of me is daydreaming about trying "AI Smart Home Installer" as my retirement job.

You know, getting paid to wander into folks' homes, ask them about their routines & habits, install Home Assistant in a fancy box bolted to a basement wall.

Since this is a daydream, I'm ignoring the phone calls when things go wrong, and all the rest
