He's posting on his own defederated Mastodon instance. It's not "social media" - it's his own site. It might as well be his personal blog. There's nothing neutral or generic about it.

Like, I don't very often see news media talk about "a post on social media" from Elon Musk?

There, it's usually more qualified. Like "a post on Musk's X, the social media site he owns" which sets the context better.

I'd expect them to say the same thing as if Jeff Bezos published an op-ed in the Washington Post 🤷‍♂️
