Dang, it's pretty cool to have gotten down to a little over 1 minute for blog updates from git push to live site.
It rebuilds the entire site from scratch every time - which took 14 seconds. The big optimization was switching to rclone to use checksums in uploads. Saves time & money.
Someday I might try optimizing the blog build itself, but 14 seconds isn't exactly stressing me out.
I've been considering switching the thing over to just use GitHub Pages and point my domain at it, rather than AWS S3 + CloudFront.
I could probably freeload entirely on GitHub / MSFT that way. But, I feel like I have *some* increment of ownership over my hosting this way?
@kusuriya Yeah, I think that's probably better... also part of why my blog's set up the way it is, is because once upon a time I was learning AWS for use at work. That's not really the case anymore, so it doesn't really benefit me that way either
Finished reading _The MANIAC_ on an exercise bike, two hours before my library loan ended.
Very interesting and ominous fictionalized account of John von Neumann ushering in the age of computing and ultimately AI amidst mid-20th-century war and churn. Culminates in the match between Lee Sedol and AlphaGo, where the AI ultimately won 4 of 5 games.
Still digesting. I do wish the author had used more paragraph breaks, since one or two chapters were just walls of words
@jorge Weirdly, I think I'm a grizzled veteran who installed Bazzite on my gaming PC and have been amazed it's lasted a year without me tinkering it into inoperability because I can't help but screw with things 😅
@tankgrrl Oh dang, I keep kind of wanting one of those. Weirdly, I used to work on an O2 at one of my first jobs out of college at an early dial-up BBS turned ISP.
No idea how they managed to get one, but I was tasked with trying to turn it into a web server because "it runs unix right?"

Unanticipated use for some of these Sonoff S31 smart plugs I got: Turns out they log energy usage to Home Assistant really well?
I just got them to turn things on and off. But, the data logging suddenly comes in very handy for a few things that I want to monitor for a few days or a week - so I can calculate how much battery backup power they might need to keep running.
@courtney If I recall, the out-of-box firmware needs replacing. I've tried both Tasmota & ESPHome on them and I think Tasmota was the easier experience?
Oddly enough, when I was trying to do regular live streams from my workbench, I managed to record myself flashing one of them
@rckenned Yeah, I've got probably a half-dozen of the things now? Controlling a few lamps and, weirdly, a 1980s Ms. Pac Man machine in the basement :)
Whenever I watch one of my old workbench livestreams I think "that looks like it was fun, why did I stop doing that?"
And the answer of course is ADHD and a lack of consistent spoon supply 😅
If I could magically jump to having a bunch of sponsors and mysterious benefactors, I would totally just livestream all day screwing around with weird gadgets and talking about them. But, it's hard to get from here to there
