Nerd A: how did you get anything done in 1992 without the internet?!

Nerd B: technically we had internet in 1992, I used to go online for the Atari forums on CompuServe

Nerd Me: technically, CompuServe forums weren't the internet

Nerd B: yeah, they were online!

Nerd Me: you could send and receive internet e-mail from CompuServe in 1992, but CompuServe had a lot of stuff not exposed or routed through the internet

Also caused additional consternation by going "actually, before 1991, you weren't really allowed to engage in commercial activity on the internet until Al Gore worked to change that"

@adeese @ramsey Yeah, that's kinda the wild thing to remember... TCP/IP and the internet weren't the only game in town in the 90s and before.

There were even points where some proprietary commercial networks were bigger, at least for the general public. And things like AOL and CompuServe made direct connections to services like airline booking mainframes

@robdaemon I had a dial-up BBS account which had a T1 line and a telnet client that I used to reach a shell account :blob_dizzy_face:

@dancast I often think about real life super powers, but they're balanced by a quirk or de-power.

Like... very high perception of motion in the environment, but great difficulty in maintaining task focus. (Or vice versa)

Extremely sensitive hearing, but very low tolerance to a noisy environment.
