That feeling when I haven't logged onto my BBS in awhile and when I do I find that someone has killed the crap out of me in Legend of the Red Dragon
I've been tempted a few times to try building my own web-based rip-off of this game
@tankgrrl oh yeah, it's been awhile but i loved duskers!
Took my garbage out, saw my neighbor doing the same. I waved. He said "fuck adulting" and I said "fuck adulting indeed". He saluted.
@brouhaha Yeah, alas, we just have cats and they refuse
@supersole Hah, yeah I have one running in a docker container and you can telnet to it! Also, there's a web UI. I neglect it for long periods of time, but it keeps running pretty well despite that
@chartier that's also a spot that takes so long to heal, you can't be doing that on a regular basis for blood rituals or proof you're not an alien or suchlike
@nelson Whoa, that place is gorgeous!
@lzg Weirdly, I too have done this? Had earbuds in, forgot, put a headset on for a meeting. Not sure anyone saw me though, so the clownery was only for me
After months of forgetting it exists, I'm suddenly interested in paying attention to my BBS again. I should upgrade the software, since it's been awhile.
And then I notice there's a new feature: MQTT integration.
I think that means I could hook that up to Home Assistant and, like, make lights blink and noises happen if a user wants to page the sysop.
Uh oh. I sense the edge of a rabbit hole yawning open before me
@darius It is Trouble
@simonbs Especially if you only ever have to do it just the once
@tim_lavoie Yeah, I've got one running in a tiny Docker container and it mostly just takes care of itself.
It's kind of ludicrously full featured, though, and I wish I had this software back when I was a sysop in the 90s working at a BBS with a real bank of modems.
@N33R i was with you right up until that last one, that's a bit of a stretch
@darius My favorite thing lately for work presos is to just throw a markdown file together with a few screenshots or funny pictures and present from Obsidian.
Maybe also show a few browser tabs. Also literal handwaving.
The Field Notes thing is great, though I've never been able to sketch very well
@darius If I want to get fancy, there's a plugin for Obsidian that renders bits between `---` as separate slides in a markdown file
@tim_lavoie Eh, not many users, and it's mostly a ghost town of neglect. But, the games usually work
@tim_lavoie Oh haha, I forget that every link posted to Mastodon invites the orbital death laser. The BBS doesn't have a super-robust web server
@dasha It's kind of old, but still works - I use "Advanced Slides"
