You know what's pretty cool? When one of your cats shows up and demands attention after being somewhere else in the house for hours. Like, that critter woke up or was in the middle of something and suddenly decided "hey, I wonder what that big human guy is up to? I need a pet."

@zkat @neia @anildash Folks don't seek out ads, but they seek out the services entirely funded by ads - to a degree that they might as well be seeking out the ads themselves.

With genAI, folks at least seem to experience more agency or influence over the output versus ad-ridden services - even if it's just goofy memes or something that feels like conversation. And sure, I've heard folks admit ethical qualms about it - but about on par with eating meat, driving cars, ordering doordash, etc

This takes me back to when, in jr high and high school, I'd download QWK packets from a half-dozen BBSes in the morning before breakfast - because that's the only time I didn't get a busy signal.

Then, I'd spend all night after homework drafting up responses to messages. I'd upload those responses the next morning, before fetching the next packet.

Conversations would take days, sometimes talk past each other, unless we waited and took turns. But, full-on essays were common.
