Also, since I'm catching up on Version History from The Verge: The last time I was a cable subscriber was around 2011, reason being that's when they stopped supporting the CableCARD that let our TiVo work.
After that, it was genuinely better to just hook a TV antenna up to the TiVo and lean on streaming for everything else. We've never gone back to cable since. https://blog.lmorchard.com/2011/06/10/cutting-the-cord/
Oh yeah, and here's the TiVo episode from Version History. Pretty keen. https://www.theverge.com/podcast/860321/tivo-tv-streaming-version-history
Also, my wife worked at TiVo for a lil while, which probably explains part of the attachment. At one point I think we had three (3) TiVos in our house, in various states of pre-release shenanigans
Of course, where I think TiVo dropped the ball is that they never came out with anything like a real streaming box. Our TiVo was eventually replaced by a cheap WD TV Live and a mod-chipped Xbox.
Then, those eventually lost to a run of cheap Amazon Fire TV sticks. These days, I have a Google streamer velcro'd to the back of the TV and a NAS in the basement full of video ripped from DVDs.
