Just finished reading Children of Strife by Adrian Tchaikovsky, snarfed it right down as fast as I could.

Man... his Children of Time series, in between all the cosmic strangeness and body horror and high concept sci-fi, somehow ends up being as optimistic and sensawunda-ful as the best of Star Trek.

Like, this part actually made me a little weepy:

Ships need captains.
Worlds and stars and seas

What are they for?

It's a spoiler, but you really need to read the whole book to fully understand what's behind the character issuing that declaration and how they got to that point.
