My dad worked most of his adult life in factories for the Ford Motor Company. He worked every scrap of overtime he could find and he gave us a good living. He loved cars and tinkering on them, so I could even imagine it was a bit of a dream job for him at first.

It was a terrible job overall, though. It gave him precarity & anxiety, frequent acute injuries, and a growing inventory of chronic conditions over the years. He literally used up his body and had less & less for himself as time went on. He was not a pleasant human to be around, though I appreciate him more with time & distance.

When he finally retired, he managed to retreat to a cabin in the woods where he'd always wanted to be and then died when his heart gave out after only a couple years there.

When I hear folks talk about bringing manufacturing back to the USA, I think about my Dad. I wouldn't wish that kind of career on anyone. It should be the goal of anyone sane to eliminate this work from the lives of humans across the planet. We all have better things to do.

Like, I appreciate the value of hard work and hunkering down to do it.

I do not appreciate an extractive system that makes us work hard at the wrong things, stupid things, injurious things in large part for someone's profit margin.

I realize that practical realities don't care about my appreciation, but that doesn't mean I have to pretend it's somehow a dignified & virtuous way to go about things.

Anyway, that's a short rant about things I'm not as well read as I should be. If I rant further, I'll just ramble off into incoherent inconsistency, so that's it for now

@susankayequinn Oof, I feel so rugged-individualist-pilled that we're indeed buying the farm share but also feel guilty we're not somehow turning our two little 5'x4' splotches of yard into self-sufficient food production for our house. How dare we rely on someone else, even if we're complete noobs at growing things 😅
