Whew, very hot in my office this morning. I have an air conditioner but have to turn it off between meetings because it's so noisy. I have a lot of meetings today. I can watch the temperature tick up at least 5ºF every meeting

re: the recent GitHub news, I am very confused by folks claiming that GitHub is "no longer" an independent company. They haven't been since Microsoft bought them.

Yeah, I guess they had some trappings of distance? But they've been owned by Microsoft and been receiving at least financial (if not tech) directives & goals since then. Microsoft employees have been doing "tours of duty" on GitHub teams.

If anything, this is Microsoft wrapping up the acquisition already in slow-motion progress

If anything, moving GitHub formally into the CoreAI group is just cementing what Microsoft has already been up to for at least the last 2 or 3 years. This isn't a sharp discontinuity

I guess my only point is that if anything changes with GitHub from here, it will probably be frog-boilingly gradual and look just as practically urgent has it has since 2018.

Nearly all current tech is shitty and at best vaguely avaricious. We're rats living in the walls of undeservingly powerful creeps. The creeps do their best to keep wall-residence more attractive than alternatives, even as it continues to enshittify.

But, I've little energy lately for building something better outside the walls. I'm kinda focused on gnawing wires, building temporary nests, staying intact.

So I guess, apropos of the GitHub news, I'm less inclined to rush to find an alternative. I'm more inclined to see how many of their cheap-to-free services I can (ab)use for my own purposes while yielding as little value as I can in return.

I mean, it's a mug's game in the end, and I imagine that they will find a way to extract value from my scurryings anyway. But it's less personally exhausting than alternatives for now, at least.

None of this is to say I'm happy with the state of affairs. Or that I'm being a clever rebel or suchlike. I'm depressed and tired. All the capacitors in my idealism circuits have popped and let out the demon-smelling smoke.

I probably need to get out of the house more, but that's where all the people are.

I tried a few times (since 2013!) to start learning French or Mandarin on Duolingo, but their style of gamified / guiltified motivation has always just made me all but break out in hives. They just hit me with one more guilt-email today and that was it

Another thing with gamified services that makes me feel like an alien and turns me right off is telling me someone passed me? I'm like, er, good for them but I'm not competing? I'm never competing?

Not for nothin but I just downloaded a 5.1GB archive of my data from GitHub. Accidentally twice, but at least I really have it now

Kinda sad that it's taking longer to transfer this 5.1GB archive from my laptop to my NAS than it took to transfer from GitHub to my laptop. :blobsad:

One of the handy things that seems to come with an account archive from GitHub are copies of bare git repos of all my stuff there. I might see if those can be sensibly assailed with a git SSG and stuck somewhere boring

I think a bunch of these repos of mine have been untouched since they were in CVS, then converted to SVN, then converted to HG, then converted to git and pushed to github. 😅
