Old man thought: the more I see stuff like "qualcomm buys arduino" and "bluesky bans blacksky poster (WAFFLES)" the more I'm like: The future is the street finding it own uses for things, always and forever.
There will be only practical wins in spite of intended use - i.e. hacks - for the benefit of friends and fellow travelers. There will only be hanging out in unsanctioned spaces for as long as the cops haven't come yet. It will always be about how much you can put up with.
I think this is a mood where I need to go read some solarpunk and immerse in good news for awhile, even if it seems unwarranted

The thing that was frustrating me to watch on Twitter is frustrating me again on Bluesky.
Folks pouring so much effort into a thing they seem to think is theirs and absolutely never will be. Doesn't matter how much noise or how many petitions or how many shitposts.
You can't own a social network by just occupying it and emanating presence and making noise. You are *ballast*, packing peanuts, slight impulses on a metrics dashboard. They'll do it without you
Like, I know Mastodon and ActivityPub are complicated, cringe, corny, and whatever else folks roll eyes at.
But at least it's something you can get closer to owning, insofar as any such thing works in the cloud. You can at least run the place.
Yeah maybe ATProto can say "you get to move your identity and your posts" - but they keep everything else that matters about why you have any of that in the first place, in big centralizing servers few folks can afford the time or money to run.
I keep peeking in occasionally at ATProto, kind of hoping they'll solve that top-heavy problem. It always seems for "later" though, because the party's still going good. Until I guess it isn't.
I don't think code will solve all this. People have to, for themselves and each other. But I do think some code is shaped in ways that help solve it better.
And all in all, this is a dumb rant because it's not like I'm leading any hugely beneficial software or community projects.
But dang, I see so many people who would be good at one or both just plowing all that they are into a brick wall sometimes.

Great, if you're planning a global soup of influencers all brandcasting past each other. They can fungibly roam from one Personal Data Server to another, each PDS hosted for who knows what incentives? Maybe for pay?
But, like, what if you want a small shared place to hang out? Maybe even with some mutual support to keep the place going?
Also, apropos of no rant, something smells like an electrical fire in the neighborhood. Pretty sure after sniffing all in and around my house, it's not us. But it's worrisome.

@zwol We had a dishwasher crack and dump a whole load of water down through basement drop ceiling tiles. Do not recommend. I ended up just tearing out the entire drop ceiling in that section, rather than replace the tiles

I only figured this out about 15 years or so ago when I first got into Arduino and learned what a shift register was, then I went nuts playing with them for input & output tinkering
Just found a Docker container that runs Obsidian on a desktop you can access from a remote desktop client in a browser.
That's nifty. Also a little terrible?
Like, when I first saw this, I thought "oh yeah, this is one of those things where they take an electron app and somehow wedge it into a real browser." You know, like they did with VSCode.
But no, this is a tiny linux desktop environment accessible via browser that happens to run Obsidian.
The wacky thing is there are a bunch of other apps they've done this with, they've got it down to an automated template, and they've been doing it for awhile now. I'm surprised I haven't seen this effort before
